Dolly Meckler — Lena Dunham's digital strategist — has been everywhere lately, thanks to the Famesick rollout, a Substack-centric book tour where Lena guest-posted across newsletters.
It got me thinking about our own industry's publicists, PR agencies and digital strategists. The ones who orchestrate campaigns, who pull off events, creator activations, screenings and stunts, who define what a launch is.
They're brilliant at it. But most of them came up in an industry that was small, private, and resistant to self-promotion — you did the work, you didn't talk about the work. I guess the LinkedIn post here and there just doesn't cut it anymore. In a fragmented media environment, building media around your own business is just as important as building it around your clients'.
