Issue 9.23.25

Morning!

I’ve been thinking about the changes happening to our media landscape, its currently giving “top of the roller coaster feel” —whether it’s layoffs, mergers, broadcast to streaming, in-house to freelance. Casey Lewis from After School wrote an essay about the media world and talked about nostalgia for “monoculture” and enjoying songs and TV together. Taylor Lorenz points out “nobody is posting anymore” (bring back the Instagram dinners!); and How Long Gone’s Chris Black chatted with Semafor about Substack and “how we’re just reinventing the magazine.” All great interviews if you’re in the business.

Warner Bros — Paul Thomas Anderson & Leonardo DiCaprio film momentum
Warner Bros’ “One Battle After Another”
There has been a groundswell of insane reviews and fan excitement around Warner Bros’ new Paul Thomas Anderson–directed and Leonardo DiCaprio–led film. With Rolling Stone calling it a “Stone Cold Masterpiece,” The Atlantic saying it “Touches a Raw Nerve,” and Variety describing PTA’s “Mesmerizing Vision,” it looks like the studio led with screenings (6 in NYC in one day) and reviews—letting word-of-mouth be front and center. Every once in a while you have a film that you can reverse engineer it so that the reviews and fans do the marketing for you.
