Morning!
Read a great piece from Kelly Wearstler about sentimental objects in design.
“Some element of the sentimental gives any space an automatic edge: objects or details that contribute an insane depth of emotion and character. And integrating these sorts of things—family heirlooms, treasured artworks—is one of the best parts of design work. Almost especially if they seem out of step, in some way, with what surrounds them. That’s a great sort of tension.”
If you work in PR or media, you might not think of yourself as a designer, but I think sentimentality translates into what we do—through interviews, campaigns, content and beyond.
Next time you’re pitching, writing or crafting a strategy, think about the sentimental objects you’re layering in—the human details that make things feel more real, and, like Kelly says, give it an edge.
